Lost....

Wow,
It has been almost four (now five, it took me a month to finish writing this post) months since the last post. You could say that we were lost for a while. The past months have been full of huge changes and events in our family's life. Of course Elodie, our favorite first daughter, is growing and developing at an amazing rate. She has gone from turning over to pushing herself up, to crawling, and pulling up to standing.
She even likes to visit mom at work. Turns out she is very good at 100's (a super-mean ab exercise). The above picture is a morning when Bryn-Erinn, Molly (a friend of ours and Elodie's baby-sitter when Bryn-Erinn is at work) and Elodie spent some time at the studio in a very involved workout.
As Elodie grows and develops, so do our strategies to keep her safe and from breaking things. We have spent quite a bit of time putting "childproof" locks on the low cabinets and drawers. This has been a good move, because it didn't take too long before she decided that the living room floor and crawling under the piano weren't the only cool places to be in the house. She also has a penchant for finding electrical cords. We are trying to get rid of as many cords as possible, and we are tacking the rest to the walls. All the outlets have plastic covers over them, which Brett finds difficult because he can't get them out to use the outlets. Of course, our fear is that we will find her with her hair standing on edge, like the Bride of Frankenstein, with the slight smell of burnt hair permeating the room, and she would probably have a big smile on her face, as if she had done something good.
Bryn-Erinn has taken on the task of feeding Elodie solid foods. Not surprisingly, Elodie has some strong opinions about the types of foods she does and doesn't like. Some of the more tart foods have proven to be great photo opportunities.

Elodie's favorite culinary pastime is avocado squares as finger food. For the most part, she is a pretty good eater (likely due to Bryn-Erinn's great baby food cooking). However, despite what seems to be a thorough post-dining wipe down, there always seems to be a bit left her in nose and behind her ears. The best are the bright green avocado eyeboogers that somehow surface hours after her last solid meal.

Early in the summer, we had an adventure with the whole Gourley family. We met everyone at Grandma and Grandpa Gourley's house. From there we drove 6 hours with four infants under the age of nine months to Ashton, Idaho. Where we spent time in a huge cabin. The sleep, eating and other cycles were all thrown to the wind, but the grandparents enjoyed time with their family. After a week Brett returned to Minneapolis to continue his work, while Bryn-Erinn and Elodie spent some time with Gramsy

and Bryn-Erinn's grandparents (Elodie's great-grandparents) in Spokane.

Way back in June, the fellowship (sub-specialty) match took place. We found out that we matched into the Dartmouth Hematology and Oncology program. This fulfills a commonly held dream of Bryn-Erinn and Brett to live in New England. We know the grandparents wanted something closer to home, and we are ready to get back out west, but after so many years away, another three will fly by. Brett will be finishing his internal medicine residency this coming June, and Bryn-Erinn has already begun looking at rentals, DMV information and utility information. She has found that New England is remarkably fashioned and archaic in many ways (e.g. car registration has to be done at the county clerk only, and it is different for all of each of the 10 counties, and is apparently so complex, they don't even bother to post details online. Never mind the garbage removal system...more on that later). In spite of the difficulties that the move will present, we are still excited to see a new place and move on to the next and final step in Brett's training.

Fun times in the House...

It has been good times at the Gourley household. Brett has been on an easy rotation, and he was able to use his last four vacation days. He decided that he would take two four-day weekends. We made good use of the time by cleaning the house, doing some sorely needed yardwork, and taking some adventures.

This is one of 11 tics that we found on Bryn-Erinn after taking a hike around Lake Elmo. Elodie and Brett had a total of zero.

Bryn-Erinn's hair after looking for tics. Can you see her "Smizing"?

Elodie in her Jumper - she loves it!

Tummy Time.

A family photo. Note the "Made in Minnesota" onesie.

The weather had turned bad so we didn't go camping, but we decided to set up the tent in the living room.

Does this Match?

Bryn-Erinn and I were debating on if this outfit matched or not. So we thought that we would put it to our 10 devoted readers to decide. Post a comment and let us know.

Some more pictures of Elodie...

Elodie is growing and developing at an amazing pace. As any parent knows little ones are a lot of work. We are sleepy in general, but we are having a blast with our little girl. Some of the big events since our last post are that both sets of grand parents came out for the baby blessing at the end of January. Bryn-Erinn has satified her 40 day sit in period and has been taking Elodie out for mall walks with some of the other young moms in town. Bryn-Erinn's young women are head over heals for their little mascot. Here are a couple of fun pictures. Elodie is a very happy baby, who by most accounts is a "easy baby", as if any baby is truly easy.

Three and a half weeks...

It is hard to believe that we have had Elodie for three-and-a-half weeks! Even more amazing is that we haven't yet made any major life-threatening mistakes. Three weeks seems like a short amount of time, although Bryn-Erinn states that she can recount every second, as she has been awake for most of that time. She did however get a good chunk of sleep last night and she now says she feels almost human.

It is hard to see what physical changes are happening in Elodie on a day-to-day basis, but we do see developmental changes. When we look at her newborn photos we see big gains in her size. At her two-week weigh in, which was done by Brett's clinic staff as our peds clinic wanted to charge us a visit for just the weigh-in, Elodie had re-gained her weight, and then some (6lbs and 1oz to 7lbs and 14oz). Elodie is having more awake time now, and she is becoming more and more vocal. We have been lucky to this point as she fusses rather than cries. Much to her Gradma Gourley's pleasure Elodie is now making spit bubbles.

We have had "Gramsy" (Grandma Pipes) here with us this last week helping out, as Brett had to return to work. Other big milestones included Elodie's first bath at home (she did not like it), and her first walk outside, even in the Minnesota winter (it was 35 degrees that day, a real warming trend).

With the exception of her reluctance to sleep in the bassinet, Elodie is an easy baby, and we are all very proud of her.

Akimashite Omeditogozaimasu (Happy New Year) and Week One...

Happy New Year Everyone! The new year also marked the first week of life for Elodie. It has been a busy, sleepless week (more for Bryn-Erinn than Brett by far), but we have seen great strides in her development. In the hospital Elodie had a moderate level of bilirubin, which made her quite sleepy. We got her out of the hospital by cold wiping wet rags over her when she went to the breast to get her to wake up to eat (the Pediatrician approved/suggested this baby water boarding). It took another day or so before she was eating at a rate, but now she mostly eats like a champ. We have also had pooh all over the baby, out the sides of the diaper, the changing station, and on the wall. I never knew that such a little girl could project so well. We did have to take her to get an ultra sound to check her sacral dimple to assure that there wasn't a fistula (a low grade form of spina bifida), which there wasn't. In the last few days she has been having more eyes open time, and we believe that she is starting to make more faces at us. We took the nice sunny weather to take some one week pictures of our little peanut. We love her very much, which is a saving grace when mom is very tired.

Welcome to the world...

As our announcement email said, Elodie Cadence Gourley was born on December 25, 2009. She is our Christmas baby. She was 19-and-a-half inches, weighed 7 pounds and 1 ounce, and had 9 and 9 apgars.
Labor was confirmed on the evening of the 24th (Christmas Eve) when Bryn-Erinn's contractions were less than five minutes apart. In the morning, Bryn-Erinn wanted to keep active, so we busied ourselves with going to various stores to walk. We knew that the stores would be busy with last minute shoppers, but we were willing to risk it in order to keep Bryn-Erinn on her feet. On our way home from the store we hit a slick spot on the snow-covered roads and Brett did everything that he could to keep from hitting the barriers. He succeeded in not hitting anyone or anything, but he did leave the car backwards in the lane. We made it home safe and sound, and
Bryn-Erinn focused on her self-hypnosis to control the labor pains. She had been having pre-labor throughout the day, and Braxton-Hicks contractions for two weeks. Brett was
very supportive, and in the midst of a Midwest winter storm which left a foot-and-a-half of fresh snow, he kept the walks shoveled in case we had to make a quick escape. We watched the "Nativity Story" before we went to bed, and Brett slept on the couch to be ready at a moment's notice in case we had to go. Bryn-Erinn's water never broke and the contractions slowed enough to allow her a few hours of sleep.
Christmas morning came, and Brett woke early to shovel the driveway again. We had breakfast and in-between contractions we opened gifts. The contractions gained in severity and Bryn-Erinn decided that it was time to go to the hospital. Brett loaded up the car, and we drove slowly over the snowy roads and we arrived to Abbott Northwestern hospital in Minneapolis without a hitch. Bryn-Erinn's general appearance and groining gave a passerby a good scare, as well as the male security guard, so we got a security escort to the labor and delivery department. Bryn-
Erinn was triaged, and she was shocked to hear that she had not made any changes since her last OB appointment. It was decided that they would observe her for an hour or two and see if she made any changes, they also wanted to run HELLP labs as Bryn-Erinn's blood pressure was high. The labs returned normal, and on the next check Bryn-Erinn's cervix had made progress. She continued in hard labor
for many more hours with the very helpful Jessica (our L+D nurse), including two hours in a hot shower. However, the pain was great and cervixal changes were slow even after the membranes had been ruptured. After 25 hours of labor, Bryn-Erinn had used up all of her coping strategies and energy, and anesthesiology was called in to place an epidural. After the bolus, Bryn-Erinn expressed her love and gratitude to the anesthesiology

team. She was able to sleep for an hour while the cervical changes were completed.
Better rested, Bryn-Erinn began to push. Both the doctor and nurse were surprised at the strength she had while pushing, and she attributed it to her years of Pilates training. Within an hour, Bryn-Erinn reached down
and brought our baby girl into this world. Brett cut the cord. From this point on it was mostly smooth sailing with the hickups of new parents (at one point of the night Bryn-Erinn shouted in her sleep, "she isn't breathing" and Brett jumped up to find that she was fine). We took some extra time to consider her name and after a good half day of discussion, we came to Elodie Cadence Gourley (we are quite proud of it).
We are very much in love with her, and are looking forward to taking her home to teach, guide, learn from, and grow with.
